“And are you sure it’s him?” Michael cradled the distance remote with incredible care, holding it in his fingers using a handkerchief.

“We found it in a secret compartment in his desk, sir,” said Max. One nod from Talia reminded him to omit the picture of Victor and his son that they had found there from the report.

Michael sighed, “I had my suspicions, of course, but I didn’t really expect that he’d be found guilty.” He put the remote back in his desk drawer, which shut with a mechanical click and locked.

Talia squinted at him. “If the drawer where you keep the remote can only be opened with your fingerprint, how did Victor manage to get it in the first place?”

Michael sat back down on his chair, his head in his hands. “How do you think? He commanded me to do it, nobody remembers what happens when a Lamadas uses his powers on them. Especially if he orders them to forget.”

Max exchanged a glance with Talia and saw in her eyes that she was feeling the same chills he felt running up his spine. The only time he had witnessed the degree of control that Victor had over his powers was in the incident with the prisoners, and it was enough for Max to never want to be on the other end of a command, much less experience the pain caused by refusing it.

“What do we do now?” Max asked.

“We proceed according to plan. Tomorrow we will arrest Victor when he gets here for work. Until then we can let him have the benefit of the doubt.” Michael gritted his teeth, and Max recoiled at the flash of anger in his blue eyes.

“Is… is there anything else we can do?” He asked hesitantly.

The flash in Michael’s eyes faded. “Apart from fixing timeline deviations, I’m afraid not.” He crossed his arms on his desk. “Nina Quaverre is evading us no matter what we try. We can only hope that this traitor in our ranks knows something.”

“Did Paul get back to you about Nina’s Philia?” Talia asked.

“The process is taking longer than he expected. For now, he is investigating everyone who has a Philia to see who got one recently.”

“Does Paul have a Philia?”

Michael and Talia both turned to him, Talia frowned, trying to recall. “I saw that he has the two symbols on his arm, but that doesn’t mean anything,” she waved dismissively.

“No, go on.” Michael looked up with a curious expression. “Clever conjecture, Max.”

Talia was playing with a string bracelet on her arm that Max just noticed.

“I didn’t know Paul personally before this happened. If he had a Philia before now, I had no way of knowing, I only noticed the two symbols on his arms when he brought me here.”

Michael considered her words. “We will have to discuss this with the senior council members from your time. I’ll need you to tell me their names, if you know them.”

Talia took a pad of paper and a pen from his desk and quickly scribbled down four names.
